Short film extract analysis- Scream 4

Scream 4- Olivia's death scene

The lighting at the start of the extract is high-key, this assists in presenting the facial expressions of the characters, this contrasts to stereotypical slasher genre film scenes. This creates an opposing effect to the movies story line and the genre, this also creates an enigma code of why its so bright in the night time? is there a real villain? As the phone is ringing the Kirby move across the room, where a back light is used on her to show her on the phone to ghost face is the main subject at that point to draw their attention away from their friend Olivia. Further more the movement in to the darker area of the room is joined by serious non-diegetic music to enhance the effect of Ghost faces' dialogue. The non-diegetic music builds up suspense as Kirby goes to open the closet door, which is anti-climactic as the closet is empty, along with this the music drops , this relieves the built up tension and suspense. The scene is moved on to Olivia's house where ghost face breaks out of the closet and commences his attack on Olivia. The use of high-key lighting shows the expressions on Olivia's face, with her screams of anguish and cries for help. The shots used in the slashing scenes are mainly medium shots, which shows the locations at which she has been stabbed. When she gets stabbed in her back we see a close up of her face, where her eyes roll to the back of her head. AS ghost face finishes his prey off he hangs he torso out the window, where the medium shot shows Olivia's bloody clothing.
