Our target audience is similar to the target audience of both BBC 3 and E4, which is 16-35 year olds. We have chosen E4 as the channel which we will present our programme on Pre-watershed at 20:00-21:00. The channels present programmes like Youngers, some girls, these programmes appeal to the younger generation and the desired demographics. The psychographic group that our programme falls into is explorers. Explorers seek discover  This is because our programme is a teen drama, which presents current issues in teenager’s lives that they face every day, like drugs and money. This is going to help teenagers that identify with our programme and the characters within it. The colloquial language of the title ‘Trill’ connotes interest in the minds of the audience, as it is old slang and a combination of the words of real and true.

E4

E4 is a British digital channel that was launched on the 18th January 2001. E4 is an extension of Channel 4, and is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The "E" stands for entertainment and is aimed at the lucrative 15-35 age group. E4 presents a mixture of US imported shows, like The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, and 90210, and British shows like Misfits, The in-betweeners and more. E4 became available on free view after May 2005. E4 was also available as part of the basic Sky satellite subscription channel package, due to a long term contract with BSkyB it only became free-to-air in 2008. This change happened on 6 May 2008 and the channel joined Freesat along with More4.

E4 introduced ‘first look’, which showed episodes of popular programmes such as Come Dine with Me, Hollyoaks, and Lost.  Since 2006 E4 has been sponsoring the E4 UdderBELLY venue at the Edinburgh Fringe, and Brighton festival. Target Audience for Existing Products

The Big Bang Theory

The big bang theory has a demographic of adult’s 18-49 year olds [1]; however the show appeals to teenagers aged 16 too. The show appeals to this demographic as the characters are memorable and each has a unique identity. The shows genre is comedy. Also, some of the problems that are on the show can be identified with the teenagers.

Youngers

Youngers audience is aimed at the ‘urban youth’ [2], and an average age of 16 [3].  The show appeals to the teenagers as it is a teenage drama that is portrays problems relating to teenagers in it.
Some Girls

The demographic for some girls is teenager’s most likely girls, as are able to relate to the teenage protagonists in the show, and are able to identify similar problems they have in real life, and make it more realistic.

Becoming Human

The target audience for becoming human is most likely to be people between the ages of 16- 30. This show appeals to them as it is not just an average TV show; it’s a show about a supernatural teen trying to fit in with the norm. The show is a drama and thriller, so it is filled with suspense and a twist.

How I Met Your Mother

The audience for how I met mother is most likely to be similar to the big bang theory audience as they are both on the same channel of E4.  These appeal to the demographic of 18-49 year olds. The show is a comedy based in the past about how a man met his wife and narrates it to his children. The main reason I believe the show is watched is due to the comedic value.

Existing Product Research

The Big Bang Theory

The establishing shot is a medium shot presenting three characters, two whom are sitting down and one standing pouring juice into cups. This connotes that the women standing is the waitress which is also evident from her costume of a waitress. The costumes the man and women are wearing can be identified as casual, from this it can show that they are at a low-brow restaurant, which is relatively cheap. This also produces a binary opposition to the man’s job and the place to which he is eating. The man is a well paid physicist, yet he eats at a cheap restaurant. However, this can also connote that he is a stingy character that does not want to spend a lot on his girlfriend. The man is using a prop, which is a mobile device, to present that he is bored or uninterested. The next shot is an over shoulder shot of the man, looking straight at the women sitting down. This makes us see through the man’s point of view, who is still utilizing the mobile device. Then there is an over shoulder shot the women facing the man. This presents a scene of dialogue. The setting is of a restaurant, this is evident from the plates of food. From this I can connote that the man and women are on a date. The fact that the man is using his mobile device creates an enigma code of is there a problem between the man and women? High-Key lighting is used in the opening scene to make the dinner date look more realistic and depict the dim lit scene of a restaurant. There is evidence of the key light and back light being used in the scene as the main protagonists can be seen more clearly, and there presentation is more rounded. The filler lights helps counteract any shadows that may appear on the characters faces, so this helps to show more definition in there facial expressions. There is non-diegetic laughter sounds placed in right after there has been a joke or incident. The sound is parallel to the scene as it comes right after punch lines, however the sound of laughter actually being placed in contradicts how real the scene is, and also creates an enigma code for the audience about who is laughing?

Youngers
The opening scene is from the first series and its first episode. The name of the program hints to the age and gender of the characters. The age can be between 14-24 plus, and the gender can be identified as mainly teenage males that use slang. The use of slang is standard to teenagers, and thus the name of the show ‘Youngers’. The purpose of the show could be that it is a medium to which the stereotypical view of teenagers can be changed, and the view of teenagers can be presented to the critics.

The establishing shot is an extreme close up of a microphone being put on a stand, this can connote that the protagonist is a singer or is related to the music industry. Also, I connote that the name of the show can be that the protagonist is a ‘younger’ in the music industry, and is taking his first step into the business. Then there is an extreme close up of head phones being put on. This connotes the protagonist is about to sing, an enigma code is created on what genre of music he is related to? Furthermore, a stereotype is also created that the protagonist is a young black male, so he is likely to rap or grime. Diegetic music is played from the start, which is evident from the shot of the sound boards and the second character sitting in front of a computer hooked up to the sound boards. The pace of the music is slow at first but picks up as the shots move on. There is an extreme close up of the protagonist kissing a pendent on his chain; this prop produces a religious side of the character presenting him as a contrast of modern day teenagers that have lost faith and belief in God.  As the protagonist starts to sing, he begins to use hand gestures, this connotes he is having fun singing, portraying it as a passion. The protagonist is cut off by his friend’s mother; this helps the young audience identify themselves with the protagonist, as they may have been in the same position as the protagonist. The shot of his mother is a low angle shot which puts her in power, and present her in charge and a higher authority.

Some Girls
The title of the program is called ‘Some Girls’, from this I can connote that the show is most likely female orientated and based on a group of them. There age is likely to be teenagers. The first ideas of this show may come up as the stereotypical life of girls and the troubles the go through in high school, like make-up, boys and puberty.

The establishing shot is shows a title of some girls in a pixel filled screen, this use of special effects present an enigma code of what is the connection between the screen and the girls. There is a straight cut to four girls in sporty costumes. The fact that there are four girls, helps portray them as the main protagonists, furthermore I can connote that they contrast from the view of stereotypical girls, as they prefer avoiding physical activity but these four girls break the norm and are in a football team. The coach’s costume is of a tracksuits and jumper, this also breaks another stereotype that most P.E teachers are male, but in this case it’s a female. The character of the coach is presented as competitive as she is hands on in her teaching, and is also disciplined evident from the shouting.  Also, the setting is of a football pitch which adds to the fact that they are on a sports team. The prop of a football identifies that they are in a football team.

Becoming human
The name of the show is ‘Becoming Human’ this gives an idea of that the show may revolve around supernatural creatures/events. This gives the genre of horror, drama, and/or thriller. The establishing shot is the camera panning up to the protagonists. This connotes that he is symbolically rising from an event/incident that may have happened. The next shot is a shot/reverse/shot of the protagonist’s face, which shows his facial expression, that present that he is dreading the return to school. The reverse shot is of school, this implies that he has a problem with school, and is like an outside. The shot goes back to his face which shows, a more serious facial expressions presenting that he is ready to face all the problems. The shot fades out into his stomach and fades back in to his back and moves to a tracking shot, this shot is really effective in moving the scene on. There is a close up of the protagonists face, he blinks and there is effective use of special effects as his eyes go black and monster like, this establishes the fact that he is a the supernatural creature that is becoming human. The stereotypical vampire is known not to come out in daytime, as he will burn to ashes; however this breaks down the stereotypical view of vampires being unable to walk in daytime. This is a smooth flow and transition. Once it fades in non-diegetic, with a pan shot around him to present he is alone, and out of the social groups.

How I met your mother
The name of the show is ‘How I met your mother’ has a humorous name, and gives an essence of comedy, and a flashback based show. This connotes it is being told by the father and he is narrating it to his children. Furthermore, I can connote that the show will be start off in the future.

The establishing shot is a bird’s eye view panning shot of a modern city. From this I can connote that the narrative, when in the past is set in this city, which looks like an American city like New York. As the panning shot continues, a voiceover starts making it sound like an actual fairytale. There is a straight cut to the main protagonist eating food in a bowl. There is backlight which creates shadow, and this is counteracted by filler lights, which enables the audience to see the protagonist’s blank facial expressions. The scene is interpreted with a straight cut to two teens sitting on a sofa, with the year ‘2038’. This connotes that these are the protagonist’s children, and we have come back to the present. The boy on the right has a change of body language, he starts off with calm, laid back posture, but then it explodes into him moving forward, and him swearing, and being censored out. This connotes he is filled with rage at his father. The boy’s sister also reacts in the same way and is also censored out. This shows that they both are enraged by their father and want to leave. The children start shouting and screaming, this connotes the character of the children as disrespectful and insolent.  There is a prop of a mug which has ‘world’s greatest dad’ on it, this contrast to their feelings of their father.

Sound
How does sound contribute to the atmosphere created in the opening scene?
The scene starts with diegetic sound of water dripping, from this I can connote that there are no people around and also links to the setting initially being near the ocean or near water, connoting that the scene is set on a ship.  From the dripping, the sound move onto menacing non-diegetic music, as the first shot of the character is seen sitting on the floor. The menacing music is parallel to the scene as we see a body on the ground, most likely being dead. The music creates a dark and spooky atmosphere, which hints to the idea that there is going to be an incident or event about to take place. The music creates a sense that the character is the villain; however the music abruptly becomes more frightening as the second character enters. The effect on the audience is that it leads them identify that the original character is not the villain but is the victim. The musics change at the entrance becomes more maniacal, this breaks down the idea completely of the first character being the villain and starts the build this character as the antagonist. The music creates tension and an enigma code of who is this man? and what is he going to do. As the man begins his descent to the man on the floor the music increases in speed, this represents that the antagonist is about to bring trouble. The Diegetic sound of the the gun shot echos, this creates an isolated atmosphere as there is no one else around, but as the man lights the match and the fuel ignites the music has a loud bang to connote that this is the end of one in the fire.

Editing
How is editing used to create drama and tension in the opening scene?
During the start of the scene there are limited cuts, which create a slow pace, to start with, this connotes a that this is setting up to the climax. As the number of cuts begins to increase in pace, the levels of intensity and suspense begin to increase. There is a cut to a low angle shot the antagonist feet, connotes that he is of higher authority and more powerful, this can hint to his role on the whole as him being a mob boss or mafia gang member. During the scene where the gun is shot, the scene cuts to different areas on the boat, this is typical of a thriller genre movie to cut to different scenes showing the surroundings. Also the cuts to different scenes produce an enigma code, of who actually died, as they did not show who got shot. The fact that there was no one on board the ship repeats the idea of a stereotypical character of being a mafia/mob member, who does not leave any witnesses behind. This is dramatic as a man has been murdered and the murder gone away scot free. Furthermore, the cigarette dropping is shown in slow motion, which creates tension, and is dramatic.

Audience theory - Tasks

Hypodermic Needle theory

The news article links to the theory as it was published by the Daily mail and it portrays the idea that if video games are played for 20 minutes each day it encourages aggressive behaviour. The Daily mail is widely spread and very influential so if readers read this they are going to develop a negative opinion in video games like Call Of Duty, and are least likely going to buy games for themselves or their children.

Two Step Flow Model
The article on Jamal Edwards links to the two step flow model as he became famous based on the things he did, so this makes him stand out and since he is so famous and well off there are larger number of people going to look up to him, as an opinion leader.

Uses and gratifications
Diversion

The media text I have chosen represents a world renowned comic book company, known as Marvel. This fits in to diversion as it accounts as a method to get away from reality and just relax and be entertained with some cartoons and chill out. The comics contain larger than life characters that present the battle between good and evil.

Personnel Relationships
Family guy is a comedy show based on a family of 5 and their dog, the show presents situation about their lives, their characters develop emotions for them, for example Meg who is disliked by everyone.

Personnel Identity
Educating Yorkshire is a documentary about a school, and the lives of students. This makes students/teenagers that watch it identify with them and relate with the problems they have.

Surveillance
This links to Surveillance as the people tend to use E-media and TV to learn useful information and in this case the weather in the area. This can help them with an idea of what to wear and to see if its hot or cold.

Dependency Theory
1)     The dependency theory is primarily used for entertainment; this is due to the fact that there are so many applications that can be downloaded easily like Face book, twitter, instagram, etc. All these apps are used for entertainment and socializing with friends.
2)     In my opinion, we are dependent on the media to a large extent. This is because more and more people are being reliant on technology for basic things, as they are easy.
3)     Personally, our dependency on the media has changed to a large extent as the internet took a large rise within the last 10 years. The application of internet has been given more importance.

The Bag- Evalutaion

Evaluation
Class Evaluation

WWW- Used the rules well for example Shot/Reverse/Shot of Armond, and Kyle staring at each other. It was suspenseful. The music worked really well, as it was parallel. The narrative was good. The 180˚ rule wasn't broken. The song used was fit for purpose, and attention to detail was on point. Kyle's walk was more natural. It was very original and well planned, the editing program was used to the best ability, well planned, and a variety of shots was used. The editing of the bag was good. The production creates enigma codes.

EBI- The camera was shaky and a few shots blurred. The camera work needs improvement. There was some background noise, and items in the shot did not match the narrative.

Self-Evaluation
WWW-Our planning was done to every last shot, and in the end we had 22 shots. The shots list helped us keep track of what we needed to do next, and how long each should be approximately. On the shots list we were going to an extreme close up of the eyes, but that was scrapped due to the camera being to close, and the actual presentation of the eyes being uneven, so we decided to use a close up of the face of Armond, to show his facial expressions as impatient, also the repeated close up shots of the fingers tapping on the desk added to the sense of waiting, and growing impatience. This created an enigma code of what he is waiting for, and surfaces an essence of suspense. The close up on Kyle’s shoes whilst he is walking up the stairs, creates another of Roland Barthes enigma codes, as we do not show his face till he enters the room, so it makes us ask ourselves who is he? The pan of the bag presents yet another enigma code of what is in the bag? As Kyle opens the door we were able to incorporate in a man-on-action shot, which was done effectively. When Kyle sits down at the table we see long shot of both Kyle and Armond staring at each other, this presents binary oppositions, but not identifying who is who. We use a Shot/Reverse/Shot to show both actors expressions to be serious, and it was effective, and the shot was done well on the whole. There are a few lines of dialogue, which are simple, and don’t give away the whole narrative. There is yet another Man-on-action shot where Armond’s hand where he goes to the bag and brings it closer to him, at this point the suspense is increasing as the contents of the bag, which is also a macguffin, is going to be revealed, however the suspense is left as a cliff hanger, this is due the moment when the bag is opened, but it fades to black, which was used effectively. Furthermore, the 180˚ rule was not broken, and made the video more effective. There was Non-diegetic music being used, but it sounded parallel, as the shot of the clock ticking made it sound diegetic. The clock ticking and the line in the song “I’m coming” made it parallel.

EBI- Next time, in the task we could pay more attention to detail on certain aspects of Mise-en-scene. This is due to the fact the costume could have been more darker, on the antagonist, and more lighter in the protagonist, so the binary opposition could be more effective, and seen better. Another aspect of Mise-en-scene we could have focused on was the setting, as in the background we could see objects that shouldn't have been there like boxes on top of the cabinets, next time we could either move the boxes or cover them to make them look more mysterious and create another enigma code. Furthermore, we could have paid attention to the effect of lighting, and there reflections, as in the medium shot of the door we could see Armond actually filming in the door window. Another area is the sound during dialogue; we could hear people talking, so it took away the effect of being more realistic. The main area we need to improve on is the cinematography, this is because the camera was shaking throughout the whole clip, which made it look amateur, next time we can use a tripod.

Teacher Evaluation:

WWW:
Sound and music were effective, especially with the sound of the clock in sync with the clock in the scene. This made the clock sound originally seem diegetic and in the scene however when the music progressed we realised it was non diegetic. It was also parallel and complimented the scene well.

An enigma code was effectively created as the identities of the characters were unknown. A clear enigma code was also created by the mysterious bag as the audience wonders what's inside.

The low angle shot of Armond in the close up of his face was effective as it made him seem more menacing and mean.

The dialogue and scripting was good as speech was clear and easy to understand.

The repeated shot of the close up on Armond's fingers was effective as it built tension and suspense.

Match on Action was also performed effectively in the scene of the door being opened and then shot from the other side showing the other character entering the door.

Editing was also effective as the fade out of music helped the scenes flow.

EBI:

There was some unintentional camera wobble and blur in scenes which made them less realistic and appealing to the audience.

The location of the scene could also have been better as the mise en scene did not suit the contents of the scene as books and posters were clearly scene, whereas dealing between two mysterious characters would have suited a more isolated, mysterious location.

There was also some unintentional diegetic sound in the background of the scenes. This took some emphasis away from the music and speech between the characters as background noises distracted the audience.
