Sound
How does sound contribute to the atmosphere created in the opening scene?
The scene starts with diegetic sound of water dripping, from this I can connote that there are no people around and also links to the setting initially being near the ocean or near water, connoting that the scene is set on a ship.  From the dripping, the sound move onto menacing non-diegetic music, as the first shot of the character is seen sitting on the floor. The menacing music is parallel to the scene as we see a body on the ground, most likely being dead. The music creates a dark and spooky atmosphere, which hints to the idea that there is going to be an incident or event about to take place. The music creates a sense that the character is the villain; however the music abruptly becomes more frightening as the second character enters. The effect on the audience is that it leads them identify that the original character is not the villain but is the victim. The musics change at the entrance becomes more maniacal, this breaks down the idea completely of the first character being the villain and starts the build this character as the antagonist. The music creates tension and an enigma code of who is this man? and what is he going to do. As the man begins his descent to the man on the floor the music increases in speed, this represents that the antagonist is about to bring trouble. The Diegetic sound of the the gun shot echos, this creates an isolated atmosphere as there is no one else around, but as the man lights the match and the fuel ignites the music has a loud bang to connote that this is the end of one in the fire.

Editing
How is editing used to create drama and tension in the opening scene?
During the start of the scene there are limited cuts, which create a slow pace, to start with, this connotes a that this is setting up to the climax. As the number of cuts begins to increase in pace, the levels of intensity and suspense begin to increase. There is a cut to a low angle shot the antagonist feet, connotes that he is of higher authority and more powerful, this can hint to his role on the whole as him being a mob boss or mafia gang member. During the scene where the gun is shot, the scene cuts to different areas on the boat, this is typical of a thriller genre movie to cut to different scenes showing the surroundings. Also the cuts to different scenes produce an enigma code, of who actually died, as they did not show who got shot. The fact that there was no one on board the ship repeats the idea of a stereotypical character of being a mafia/mob member, who does not leave any witnesses behind. This is dramatic as a man has been murdered and the murder gone away scot free. Furthermore, the cigarette dropping is shown in slow motion, which creates tension, and is dramatic.
